The big Tragedy
in our Country:
Accident of the
boat named "Joola"
( The events and
reasons of the accident )
In the night of Thursday,
September 26th, 2002, the "Joola" boat which connected
Dakar to the southern City of Ziguinchor capsized in the territorial
Gambian sea. There were the storm and a strong wind. It was transporting
around 1034 persons, commodities and cars. The authorities and
the Senegalese people knowing nothing about the accident until
the next day at seven o'clock am.
What are the reasons
of the accident?
-
The
captain of the boat has not checked the boat capacity before
travelling
-
The
baggages in the boat were not well packed
-
The
ferry was too full: overloaded by baggages and people
-
Just
one out of two engines was working
-
The
ferry was not qualified to navigate on the sea
-
It
was much slow because of it's weight
-
The
storm and the strong wind were coming opposite the boat
-
The
capacity of the boat was five hundred fifty five passengers
and the day of the tragedy there were more than a thousand passengers
in the boat : students, traders, tourists... The bad weather
intensified the problems and this is the origin of the accident
and the death of many people.
For us, the main reason
of this tragedy is the unconscious acts of the senegalese people.
For example, a violent wind was predicted by the Meteo but they
allowed the boat to navigate.
