Elegy : Dark September

September26th,

We never forget that day

September 26th,

The joy is engulfed in Senegal

September 26th 2002,

One Boat capsized in the gambian coast

September 26th,

Many men, wives, kids won’t forget that day

September 26th,

Wholes families, relatives, brothers, sisters, neighbours, friends have left us forever

Oh my God, oh ALLAH almighty

What have we done?

O.k, we’re sinners but we don’t deserve this punishment ‘cause we’re men, made with flesh, blood, bones and we know that a man can’t be perfect

Parents are moaning their sons

Sons are crying for their parents

And we, we’re crying for our lost Brothers, sisters and relatives

I can’t realize that Diadia, a joyous girl, is gone forever

I can’t realize that Ouzin, a worthy man is gone forever

No can’t realize it

I can’t realize it…

I can’t realize it…

All is like before anymore

Nothing will ever be the same anymore

The shadows of the JOOLA hover and continue to hover in Senegal, in our minds

May ALLAH have mercy for the shipwrecked and receive them in his great paradise!!!

Amen!!!

I remember…….
Sat on the sand, the eyes fixed on the ocean,
I remember…….
I remember this drama which struck us,
I remember our brothers, sisters, fathers and mothers drowned for ever
I think about their closed doors, not to be open any more,
I think about those dear children who found themselves orphans,
I think about them who left for the eternal rest…….
I think about that boat which used to make our joy and which is making us cry today
I remember those songs which have changed into cries,
However…….hope will never be drowned by the sea…….It will reappear in our hearts.

Tears

I have tears in my eyes,
And I'm still crying,
How many foreigners,
How many children,
How many women and men
Have died in this boat?
So many lives lost,
So many goods lost,
How could this happen to us?
We, Who have always been good believers,
After so many years of trouble down south,
We were thinking about rebuilding that part;
But, no, another tragedy,
A bad accident killing, so many innocents!
We have our tears in our eyes,
Knowing that their death will be unpunished,
We have our tears in our eyes,
For having lost fathers, mothers, children and friends;
Let's dry them out and say in our heart
That, it's already the past.
Let us condemn and take a lesson from this
Let's keep on living………….
Anyway that's life.

This poem is dedicated to the victims of the boat "Joola"

Why?
Why?
Why?
Why has the "Joola" sunk?
I am thinking about all those people
Who have perished in the boat
Men, women, children left to their destiny.
God!, why did you separate families
From their loved ones?
But I believe that each person has a reserved destiny
Those unfortunately were just facing their sad destiny.
Those women, men and children have all perished in the deep ocean
My heart is full of pain and sadness
When I think about you innocent people,
I ask my self: God! do people know the intensity of the pain one feels
When someone you love dies and leaves forever?
God! You , who have the power of decision.
Give us and the families the force to survive
You all, friends from around the world help the victims' families
Keep them in your thoughts and prayers!
It is hard for me!
It is hard for the victims' families!
It is hard for all the Senegalese people!
But with the help of God we will overcome.

Our hope is gone…
When we look at you, sea, …
We remember the disaster,
So many lives , ruined, see
They went enjoying themselves
Hoping to come back safe and sound,
But destiny, the master of life,
Had decided,what a cruel fate !
Crying was too late
Destiny , how many men, women and children,
Did you kill surprisingly that day ?
Our tears are still on our sad stare !
Hoping everyday that they'll come back,
We spend most of our time praying…
Is life nothingness ?
God bless the world.

Dedicated to all the people who died in the Joola shipwreck

Is September a cursed month ?
If I weren't born in this month,
I'd cross it off the calendar,
September, in the world,
Has brought so many misfortunes :
I still remember that September which saw
So many Palestinians massacred in Jordan,
It was nicknamed "Black September",
I remember the World Trade Center tragedy !
How many lives gone in a minute!
It was called "11th of September"
I am living the "Joola shipwreck",
Called "26th of September",
What shocking news that day !
When very early in the mourning,
One of the local radios broadcast :
"The Joola boat sunk last night, many lives lost ! very few survivors !
"No quick rescue at that moment of the night………."
I sprung up from my bed and soon realised that I wasn't dreaming,
Alas, it was no use crying over spilled milk…
The misfortune has already happened.
Unable to understand God's secrets
We endure but can't help supposing :
"If……………If……………..If"
Is life worth living ?

The 26th September 2002,
A tragedy struck our country
The Joola was shipwrecked
And our fathers, mothers, brothers,
Sisters and friends died.
We are weeping you until now
And Senegal, in chorus,
Will never forget you.

God bless them !

Nobody ever thought that this would happen
But it did, yes this terrible thing happened.
The "Joola" boat sunk into the sea.
And she went away full of thousands of Senegalese children .
Tears are in the eyes, sadness in the hearts and despair on the faces
Human fault or God's will? Everybody was asking
But whatever it is, after having cried our relatives' death
Let's pray for them! May God take them to Paradise. Amen!

September 26th 2002, a date to memorize!

In the mind of all the Senegalese,
The hundreds of people who lost their lives,
Leaving their families alone,
Leaving their neighbours alone,
Will never be forgotten
Like a candle in the wind,
Like a flame that lost all it's glamour,
We will live in sadness,
We will always cry,
We will build a temple in our heart,
Which will always make us remember
Sleep in peace.

Tears

We are in tears
We are still crying our shipwrecked
Most of you were Senegalese and foreigners,
You perished in the "Joola" boat.
An unforgettable day,
Which saw everybody unhappy
We have so much pain
In our heart, we are suffering
I hope this is never going to happen again
I wish the drowned rest in peace.

Pain

It was that 26th of September 2002
When pain and grief filled our hearts,
That day, that sad day,
When the "Joola" shipwrecked off the Gambia
Oh Lord, what a painful day !
Oh Lord, was there anything to do ?
But Lord there should be at least something to say !
That day, the "Joola" left Casamance full of people
Hoping to arrive peacefully.
But it was going to sink…
Casamance, we offer our sympathy for lost sons and daughters,
Be strong enough to face this awful event
So, let's accept all, it's God's will.
May God welcome you in his Paradise
But do know that you'll always haunt our minds
Do know that, that day will be an unforgettable day !

Senegal, my dear country,

You will never forget that 26th and 27th september 2002
Dear Senegal, you unexpectedly lost
Many of your children in a few minutes
Moment, which was like a candle in the wind
We were sad, desperate,panick stricken
But death allowed us
To think about God, in pain
God is the greatest, He is
Our Creator and the only King….
Death showed us that we
Are only God's slaves and we
Must accept a fate.
" God is great….
All the time "

The " Joola " boat

When I lay my head
On my pillow,
Thinking about the accident
Of the " Joola " boat,
My heart has a strong desire
Just stop one minute to breathe
A lot of people died that day,
Unable to help, I cry and pray.
May God, the Allmighty
Bless them all
And save their soul

"Joola Boat"

Joola Boat, what a tragic destiny !
On that boat, joyously sailing in the darkness,
Off the Gambia, heading to Senegal
Lives full of hope, suddenly found themselves helplessly fighting with the cold waves.
All then, realized that they were facing a tragic destiny.

Bearing in mind that there was no use fighting,
Over the waves, some lucky ones yet struggled and survived,
All the rest got drowned and many disappeared.
The terrible news spread over the nation which sank into long, deep and dark mourning days.
